Persistent Inequalities and New Polarizations: Addressing Unequal Social Change
Large societal changes are underway but what do they mean for social inequality?
With this year’s theme we want to highlight the research being done in ECSR member institutions on understanding how social inequalities are evolving, what are the drivers of change, and how might societies react or adapt to these changes.
The grand narrative of inequality currently is that of polarisation: the gap between the advantaged and the disadvantaged is growing wider and/or a smaller share of the population is in the middle of the distribution.
This situation is at risk of becoming more acute due to developments such as large-scale AI adoption in workplaces, sluggish economic growth, and population ageing. Yet inequalities in different domains change in distinct ways and for varied reasons. Furthermore, societal changes tend to take time, and different social groups as well as societal institutions have various ways of resisting or adapting to change.
